Presidents Message

Members of WCRA ~

The convention was a great success and now it is time to look forward to a new and exciting year. The membership spoke clearly–that it was time for change–and your new board and I have heard you loud and clear.

While the board and I are still developing our specific goals for the year, I wanted to share some initial thoughts with you.

I intend to focus a great deal of my attention on promoting realtime within the state. I believe this is critical to the success of our profession. I have even had some interesting talks with other NW court reporting associations about reinstating local realtime and speed contests with perhaps a NW contest between each state’s top contenders. This could get us some great press on the issue and might be a fun way to engage more reporters.

As a member of the bar I am hopeful that I can build stronger relationships between our local bar associations and the WCRA so that we can have their support in addressing the tough issues we are facing. I also think many attorneys are not well educated on the value of realtime reporting and importance of making a quality record. It is time to turn our clients into advocates.

I also would like to reassess what WCRA is doing to support our students. While we have one named scholarship that we provide each year, we have done little to expand these efforts, and I know that, in these tough economic times, many students are finding it challenging to focus because of work and family concerns. Let’s refocus our efforts and provide meaningful support for our students.

These are just some of my earliest thoughts. I welcome your feedback, your thoughts, and your involvement as we work to advance the mission of the WCRA throughout the coming year.

Best wishes always,

Steve Crandall
