Well, the legislative session for WCRA is finally over this year. We were able to successfully pass out of both the House and Senate our legislative issues this year.
Senate Bill 6450, mandatory continuing education, was signed into law March 10, 2010 by Governor Christine Gregoire. WCRA President Roger Flygare, Legislative Chair & Area 1 Director Mark King, and Donna Bankston, GRCC court reporting student, were on hand for the signing of this historic legislation.
House Bill 2861, placing certified court reporters into the law governing people authorized to administer oaths and affirmations pass as well through both branches of the Washington legislature with Governor Christine Gregoire signing it into law on March 17, 2010. Again, President Roger Flygare was on hand for the signing of yet another historic piece of legislation for our profession.
Please note that both of these bills will take effect 90 days after the conclusion of the 2010 regular session, which by my calculation will be somewhere near June 15, 2010.
June 12th is the date for the WCRA Board of Directors strategic planning session. As we move forward toward that date, I am encouraging our membership to write me with regard to any concerns they may have, whether it’s related to the new regulations that were recently approved and signed into law, or something that you would like to see your Board of Directors consider.
Our Spring Seminar is shaping up and I would encourage you to SAVE THIS DATE of May 15, 2010 so that you will have it on your calendars to attend. It is again being hosted at Green River Community College.
WCRA’s Fall Convention and Educational Conference is scheduled to be held on October 8-10, 2010. The final location has yet to be decided but it will probably be in one of the following sites, Lynnwood, Yakima or Tri-Cities. The convention committee is investigating where we can get the best value while at the same time attracting the most attendance.
I hope this find you all doing well and that everyone’s financial situation is improving during these trying economic times.
Best wishes to you all,
Roger G. Flygare, President
Washington Court Reporters Association
